Moderator - Revd Andrew Mills

Andrew was invited to take up the role of Synod Moderator in September 2015, and was willing to respond to that call to share with others the wide ranging responsibilities for the life and witness of the churches across the Synod.

Within the breadth of the task Andrew sees the pastoral care of ministers and the support of congregations as a priority, in enabling both ministers and churches to fulfil their calling to a life of Christian work, worship and witness in local communities.

Andrew also represents the Synod at a regional (and national) level, particularly in ecumenical contexts where building relationships is key to a closer working together and a cooperation which strengthens our joint witness to Jesus Christ.

Andrew is married to Ruth, and they have 4 adult children Harriet (married to Tom), Amy, Elspeth and Esther. In addition the family seem to accumulate pets including 4 guinea pigs, 2 cats and 2rabbits.

Clerk - Revd Brian Jolly

Brian is currently a Minister serving at Altrincham URC and has also served in Stockport, Bolton and Blackburn.
As Synod Clerk, Brian is responsible for much of the administrative life of our Synod and, in particular, organising Synod meetings and Synod Executive Committee meetings. He has line management responsibilities for some of the office staff and works with the Officers and serve on the Executive and Resources Committees.

Treasurer - Mike Hart

The Synod Treasurer sets the budget, helps local churches understand their contributions to the URC and Synod budget, leads on the Synod grants' programme which supports our churches with around £100,000 a year. The treasurer works closely with our finance worker, and with the other Officers, and the Treasurer serves on the Executive and Resources Committees.

Trust Chair - Jean Mullineux

Jean Mullineux

As Convener of Synod Resources Committee and Chair of Trust it is Jean’s role to ensure that matters relating to property and finance are managed effectively and appropriately; and as Chair of the Trust Company to ensure it acts as Custodian Trustees for property and investments on behalf of the Synod and of the local churches.

Property Officer - Mike Aspinall

Mike is recently retired from working as a Building Services Consultant for 41 years, and hence bring a considerable amount of experience to the position of Synod Property Officer.

Office Manager and Moderator's PA - Hazel Wall

Office Manager - Hazel WallHazel Wall has worked for us since 1994 and helps the office to run smoothly. She works, in particular, with the Moderator, Clerk and a large part of her role is organising the Clerk in particular around Synod Meetings.

Administrative Assistant - Kerry Later

KerryLaterKerry Later has worked for us since 2008 and Supports Hazel in the smooth running of the office. Kerry’s duties include Audio typing, filing, emails, Church Returns and other office duties.

Finance Officer - David Wyke

Legal and Trust Officer - Adelle Hartwell

This role-holder advises the Synod Resources Committee and churches of the various legal aspects of our life together - particularly over the sale and rent of property ensuring we work within the provisions of the URC Acts and charity law.

Learning & Development Officer - Tim Mountain

TimMountainTim is a Baptist minister who pastored churches in Kent and Lincolnshire for some 25 years. In October 2016 Tim was appointed to a role shared between the North Western Synod (Learning and Development Officer) and Northern College (Support and Development Tutor).

His Synod responsibilities include tutoring an Introductory Course for candidates accepted for training for URC ministry, overseeing EM2 ministerial development, and organising learning and training opportunities for EM3 ministers. His college role includes supporting EM1 ministers through their training.
He is married to Shirley and they have two adult children. He has been a Spurs supporter since childhood, through which he learns lessons about hope and shattered dreams.

Children & Young People's Officer - Leo Roberts

Learning Development Officer Youth Childrens Work - Children & Young People's Officer: Leo RobertsLeo is the Children and Youth Development Officer (CYDO) for the North Western Synod. He is responsible for encouraging and enabling local churches to more effectively meet the needs of the children and young people in the community served by the church - whether in church groups or in the local community. 

Safeguarding Advisor - Julie Rafferty

JulieRafferty.jpgJulie is the Synod Safeguarding Advisor and her main responsibilities are…:

  • Delivery of safeguarding training to ministers and safeguarding coordinators
  • Creating safer environments within the church, ensuring that key individuals have current DBS checks in place
  • Responding to safeguarding allegations and concerns
  • Ensuring that churches have up to date Safeguarding policies and procedures

We feel privileged and grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside all the churches in the North Western Synod and to grow together in our discipleship and being part of God’s mission.

In our role as Mission & Discipleship Mentors, we will endeavour to discern, work with you, and support you as part of a vision or plan which you already have in place. Therefore, our support will be bespoke, sustained and targeted. We will work alongside you to do Jesus-shaped planning, Jesus-shaped action and Jesus-shaped reflection. We will endeavour to support you with worship and preaching resources, Bible study resources, personal reflection resources and Jesus-shaped change resources.

We are excited, to follow Jesus on this ‘road trip’ alongside you, to learn from Him and each other, to enable us to make a Jesus-shaped difference in our communities and in the wider world.
