Missional Discipleship

Mission and Discipleship Mentors – equipping the local church

Meet Your Mentors!

We are the Mission & Discipleship Team, working with the churches of the North Western Synod of the United Reformed Church to encourage churches on their journey of discipleship of Jesus and engagement with God’s mission of transforming the world into the Kingdom of God. Our vision: is to create Jesus-shaped churches, full of Jesus-shaped people, making a Jesus-shaped difference to the lives of their communities.

How we came about

In October 2016 The North Western Synod meeting authorised the creation of three new Area-based Mission & Discipleship Mentor posts for (Lancashire, Central, and South and Cumbria)The role of these new Mentors was to accompany the members of each local church and facilitate the exploration and development of their Mission and Discipleship, in their particular contexts.

The role of your Mentors is to accompany the members of each local church and facilitate the exploration and development of their Mission and Discipleship, in their particular contexts, providing training, support, and more.

What support can a Mentor offer?

Mentors can offer all sorts of support to individuals, interest groups, local churches, Missional Partnerships, and more.

I'm not sure what we'd ask our Mentor to help with

Not sure what to do? Your Mentor can attend your Elders Meeting, offering a time of reflection. Then together you can develop a range of activities designed to support your situation.

Can we only work with the Mentor for our Area?

It is usual to work with the Mentor for your area and you should make contact with them first. However, each Mentor also has specialisms and if they are better suited to your needs, your Mentor may arrange for their support

Daleen can support you to think about environmental issues, and how to become an Eco-Church.

Lawrence can support you with IT, websites and becoming a hybrid church, mission and evangelism, Bible study, worship and preaching development.

Will a Mentor run training events for us?

Workshops can be delivered on a variety of themes, as well as retreat days, and specialised support on mission and evangelism projects, eco church, and community development.

Is there a cost to us?

If your mentor is helping you to set up a new project or initiative, there may be a cost element to whatever project you are undertaking. But the time and expenses of your Mentor are covered by the synod, and there is no direct charge to you.
