The Sacraments

lay presidency at Baptism and Communion

The United Reformed Church celebrates the two sacraments of Baptism and Communion, believing both to be of great importanve in the Christian faith.

We also believe passionately in the ministry of the whole people of God, and therefore it is not only an ordained minister who can preside at the sacraments.

Presiding at the Sacraments
In Good Standing

in your local congregation

In the United Reformed Church the local church meeting is central to the life of each local church. Who presides at the sacraments is primarily a matter for them. This person should be an elder of the church in ‘good standing’ with the congregation.

Ensuring Good Order

in the Church

As well as being in ‘good standing’ with their local church each person who presides at the Sacraments in public worship is also representing the whole United Reformed Church. For this reasaon those presiding at the Sacraments must also be authorised by the Synod, via the Area Pastoral Committee.

Presiding at the Sacraments
In Good Relationships

with our ecumenical friends

The need for ‘good standing’ and ‘good order’ is also an ecumenical consideration, indicating to our partners and friends we also hold the Sacraments in high regard and our understanding of the ministry of the whole people of God is not simply ‘anyone can do what they want’.

Good Practice

and life-long learning

We also believe in life-long learning and that everyone in ministry should keep up-to-date with good practice and new and imaginative ways of leading worship. So all authorised people are required to attend our refresher courses every three years.
